Taps ignored, ghost touches, or a frozen screen? Work out whether it is software, a screen protector, or real damage.
Quick fix⏱ 5–20 miniPhoneAndroid
An unresponsive touchscreen feels like a hardware failure, but most of the time it is not. A frozen app, a crashed system process, moisture, or a cracked or lifting screen protector can all stop touches registering — and every one of those is fixable at home.
The trick is to separate "the phone has frozen" from "the screen cannot feel my finger". If the clock still ticks and notifications still arrive, the phone is alive and the problem is input. If everything is stuck, it is almost always software and a forced restart will clear it.
Try these first — 30 seconds each
[ ]Dry your hands and the screen — water droplets and sweat confuse capacitive screens and cause phantom taps.
[ ]Take off thick gloves, and try touching with a clean fingertip rather than a nail.
[ ]Remove the case and screen protector if either is pressing on the edges of the display.

1
Force-restart the phone
A forced restart works even when the screen will not respond. iPhone 8 and later: press and release volume up, press and release volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. Most Android phones: hold the power and volume-down buttons together for 10–20 seconds until the phone restarts.
2
Test the screen in zones
Once it is back up, open a drawing or notes app and drag your finger slowly across the whole screen, top to bottom and side to side. If the line breaks in the same strip every time, that part of the digitiser (the touch layer) is damaged. If it works everywhere, the problem was software.
3
Check the screen protector
Cheap or cracked glass protectors, and ones with air bubbles along the edge, are a very common cause of dead zones. Peel it off from a corner and test again. If touch returns, replace it with a good-quality protector that is cut for your exact model.
4
Look for a misbehaving app
If the screen only stops responding inside one app, update it, then clear its cache (Android: Settings → Apps → the app → Storage → Clear cache) or delete and reinstall it (iPhone). Also check for a pending system update — touch bugs are occasionally fixed in point releases.
5
Adjust touch sensitivity
Many Android phones have a "Touch sensitivity" or "Screen protector mode" toggle under Settings → Display that boosts sensitivity for thicker protectors. On iPhone, Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Touch Accommodations can help if the screen registers accidental touches, but turn it off again if it makes things worse.
6
Try safe mode (Android)
Safe mode starts the phone with only the built-in apps. Hold the power button, then long-press "Power off" until the safe mode prompt appears. If the screen works normally in safe mode, a recently installed app is interfering — uninstall recent downloads one by one.
Platform notes
iPhone
If the screen is completely unresponsive and you need to back up before a repair, connect the phone to a computer you have trusted before and back it up through Finder (Mac) or the Apple Devices app / iTunes (Windows).
Android
Samsung phones include a touch test in the Samsung Members app (Support → Phone diagnostics → Touch screen), which maps dead areas precisely.
Stop it happening again
Use a quality screen protector and replace it as soon as it cracks.
Avoid charging with cheap, uncertified cables — faulty chargers can cause erratic touch behaviour while plugged in.
Keep the phone out of extreme cold, which makes screens sluggish.
When to get professional help
If the same area of the screen never responds, the screen shows lines or black patches, or there is a crack anywhere on the glass, the display assembly needs replacing. Get a quote from the manufacturer or an authorised repair shop before paying for a third-party part.
This is general troubleshooting information for home users. Menus and settings differ between
device models and software versions. Back up important data before making changes, and contact
the manufacturer or an authorised repair provider for hardware faults or anything under
warranty.
