Before assuming the charging port or battery has failed, know that the most common reason a phone stops charging is almost comically simple: pocket lint packed into the port so the plug no longer seats fully. The second most common is a cable that has broken internally near the connector, where it bends the most.
Work from cheapest to most expensive: check the port, then the cable, then the charger, then the software. Most people never get past step two.

Clean the port gently
Power the phone off. Use a wooden toothpick or a plastic dental pick — never metal — and gently scrape along the inside walls of the port, not the centre contacts, to lift out lint. A puff of air from a blower helps. You will often be surprised how much comes out.

Isolate cable vs charger
Swap one thing at a time. Try the suspect cable with a known-good charger, then a known-good cable with the suspect charger. Cables that only charge at a certain angle or disconnect when wiggled are damaged and should be replaced.

Try a different power source
Laptop USB ports and cheap multi-port hubs may not supply enough power. Plug straight into a wall charger. For fast charging you need a charger that supports your phone's standard (USB Power Delivery for iPhone and most Androids).

Force-restart the phone
iPhone (8 and later): press and release volume up, press and release volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. Android: hold power and volume down for about 10–15 seconds on most models. This clears charging-controller glitches.

Check for temperature and optimised charging
Phones pause charging when too hot or cold, and "optimised charging" deliberately holds at 80% overnight. If charging stops at exactly 80%, that is a feature, not a fault — it will finish before your usual wake time.

Try wireless charging as a diagnostic
If your phone supports it and wireless charging works while the cable does not, the problem is almost certainly the port rather than the battery.
Platform notes
iPhone
An "Accessory may not be supported" message usually means a damaged or uncertified cable, or moisture in the port.
Android
A "moisture detected" warning blocks wired charging until the port dries. Let it air-dry for a few hours; do not use heat or rice.
Stop it happening again
Unplug by holding the connector, not the cable.
Replace frayed cables early — exposed wires near the plug can overheat.
Keep phones in a pocket without loose fluff, or check the port every few months.
When to get professional help
If no cable, charger, or wireless pad charges it after cleaning and a force-restart, the charging port or battery needs professional repair. Also stop immediately if the phone or cable gets unusually hot or smells of burning.
