Phones get warm during gaming, video calls, navigation, and fast charging — that is normal. What is not normal is a phone that is hot while sitting idle, shows a temperature warning, or dims the screen and slows down on its own. That is the phone protecting itself, and it is worth finding out why.
Heat is also the main thing that ages a battery, so fixing an overheating habit extends the life of the whole device.

Cool it down the right way
Remove the case, turn off the screen, and leave it on a hard surface in the shade, ideally in front of a fan. It should drop to a comfortable temperature within 10–15 minutes.

Find the busy app
Check the battery usage screen (it doubles as an activity monitor). An app with lots of background activity is generating heat. Update or reinstall it; if it keeps happening, restrict its background activity.

Check for runaway syncing
A large photo backup, cloud sync, or app update after a new install can run the processor hard for hours. If that is the cause, let it finish on Wi-Fi while plugged in somewhere cool.

Look at your charging setup
Fast charging while gaming or streaming is the classic overheat. Use a certified charger, avoid charging under pillows or on the bed, and consider a slower charger overnight.

Update the system software
Thermal management bugs are regularly fixed in system updates. Install any pending update, then restart.

If you see "iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it", do not force it — let the phone sit until the warning clears.
Android
Many Android phones have a "Device care" or "Battery & device care" screen that flags apps with abnormal activity.
Stop it happening again
Do not leave phones on car dashboards or in glove boxes in summer.
Use a thinner case if you game or navigate for long stretches.
Keep at least a few GB of storage free — a full phone works harder.
When to get professional help
If the phone overheats while idle and not charging, the back or screen is swelling, or you smell burning, power it off and take it to an authorised repair centre. These can be signs of a failing battery.
