Missed notifications are rarely a fault. Modern phones have several layers that can silence an app — focus and do-not-disturb modes, per-app notification permissions, notification summaries, and aggressive battery optimisation that stops apps checking for new messages in the background.
Work through those layers from the top down. Nine times out of ten, one of them is set in a way you did not intend, often after a system update or when you set up a new phone.
Try these first — 30 seconds each
[ ]Swipe down to check that Do Not Disturb, a Focus mode, or Bedtime mode is not switched on.
[ ]Check the ring/silent switch (iPhone) or volume mode (Android) — silent mode mutes sounds but notifications should still appear on screen.

Check focus and scheduled modes
iPhone: Settings → Focus. Look for schedules that turn on automatically (Sleep, Work, Driving) and check which apps and people are allowed through. Android: Settings → Notifications → Do Not Disturb (or Modes), and check any schedules.

Confirm the app is allowed to notify
iPhone: Settings → Notifications → the app. Make sure Allow Notifications is on and that Lock Screen, Notification Centre, and Banners are ticked. Android: Settings → Notifications → App notifications (or Settings → Apps → the app → Notifications) and make sure the relevant categories are on — apps often split alerts into several channels.

Turn off notification summaries
iPhone's Scheduled Summary holds notifications and delivers them in batches. Go to Settings → Notifications → Scheduled Summary and either turn it off or remove the app from it.

Stop battery saving from killing the app
Android phones can put apps to sleep to save power, which delays or blocks notifications. Go to Settings → Apps → the app → Battery and choose "Unrestricted". Samsung users should also remove the app from "Sleeping apps" and "Deep sleeping apps" in Settings → Battery → Background usage limits. On iPhone, make sure Low Power Mode is off and Background App Refresh is allowed for the app.

Check the app's own settings
Many messaging and email apps have their own notification switches inside the app, separate from the phone's settings. Also check that you are signed in — some apps silently stop sending push notifications after a password change.

Update, restart, and reinstall if needed
Install any app and system updates, then restart the phone. If one app still will not notify, delete and reinstall it — this re-registers it with Apple's or Google's push notification service, which fixes stuck registrations.
Platform notes
iPhone
Focus modes sync across your Apple devices by default. If notifications vanish when your Mac or iPad is in a Focus, turn off "Share Across Devices" in Settings → Focus.
Android
Brands with heavy battery management (Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Huawei) are the most likely to delay notifications. Search your model on dontkillmyapp.com for brand-specific settings.
Stop it happening again
After a system update, spot-check Focus and battery settings — updates sometimes reset them.
Keep important apps out of battery restriction lists.
Give VIP contacts permission to break through Focus and Do Not Disturb.
When to get professional help
If no apps at all can deliver notifications even after a restart and updates, back up the phone and contact the manufacturer's support; a reset of all settings (which keeps your data) is often the next step they will suggest.
