People spend a lot of money upgrading internet plans and very little time thinking about where their router lives. But Wi-Fi is radio, and radio is picky about walls, water, metal, and distance. A router tucked behind the TV in a corner of the house is working with one hand tied behind its back.

A few minutes spent moving it can fix dead zones that you were about to buy an extender for.

Central, high, and in the open

Wi-Fi spreads out from the router roughly like a ball, not a beam. Put it in a corner and half that ball is wasted outside your walls. Aim for as central a location as the cabling allows, at around chest height or higher — on a shelf rather than the floor.

What blocks Wi-Fi most

Some materials barely affect the signal; others are brutal:

Metal — filing cabinets, fridges, mirrors with metal backing, and foil-backed insulation
Water — fish tanks and, yes, people in a crowded room
Concrete, brick, and stone walls, especially external walls
Underfloor heating and some types of energy-efficient window glass

Point the antennas sensibly

If your router has adjustable antennas, set some vertical and some horizontal. Devices hold their own antennas at different angles, and mixing orientations improves coverage across floors.

When moving is not enough

Large homes, multi-storey houses, and thick walls may need more than one access point. A mesh Wi-Fi system — two or three units that work as one network — is the most user-friendly option. If you can run an Ethernet cable between units, performance is even better.

Single plug-in extenders are the cheapest option but often the least satisfying: they halve bandwidth and can create a second network name that devices cling to after you move rooms.
