Virtual private networks are one of the most heavily advertised products online, and the marketing often overstates what they do. A VPN is a genuinely useful tool in specific situations, but it is not an invisibility cloak, and it will not stop most of the threats that actually affect everyday users.

Here is what a VPN really does, when it helps, and when your money is better spent elsewhere.

What a VPN does

A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and a server run by the VPN company. Websites see the VPN server's address instead of yours, and your internet provider (or whoever runs the Wi-Fi you are on) sees only that you are connected to a VPN, not which sites you visit.

In other words, you are shifting trust from your internet provider to the VPN company. That is only an improvement if the VPN company is more trustworthy.

When it genuinely helps

Using public Wi-Fi you do not trust, such as in cafés, hotels, and airports
Travelling and wanting to reach services from home that are blocked or geo-restricted
Hiding your browsing from your internet provider or a network administrator
Connecting securely to a work network (a company VPN is a different product with the same name)

What it does not do

A VPN does not stop phishing, malware, or scams. It does not stop websites tracking you through cookies or your logged-in accounts — if you sign into Google, Google knows it is you. And almost all websites already use HTTPS encryption, so the "hackers on public Wi-Fi reading your passwords" scenario in the ads is much less likely than it once was.

If you do use one

Avoid free VPNs that fund themselves by collecting and selling your data. Look for a provider with an independently audited no-logs policy, a clear home jurisdiction, and a track record. Expect speeds to drop somewhat, especially if you connect to servers far away.

Better first steps for most people

If you are choosing where to spend security effort, a password manager, two-factor authentication on your email, and keeping devices updated will protect you from far more real-world attacks than a VPN will.
