A 4K stream needs roughly 15โ25 Mbps of steady bandwidth. That sounds low compared with most internet plans, but TVs are often the worst-placed device in the house for Wi-Fi: behind furniture, at the edge of range, with older Wi-Fi hardware inside.
Buffering is usually about consistency rather than raw speed. A connection that averages 100 Mbps but dips to near zero every few seconds will still buffer.
Try these first โ 30 seconds each
[ ]Restart the TV or streaming device fully (unplug it for a minute).
[ ]Check whether other devices are downloading heavily.
[ ]Try another app โ if only one app buffers, the problem is that service.

1
Test from the TV itself
Many TVs and streaming devices have a network test in settings, and apps like Netflix have a built-in check (look for "Check your network" in the help menu). This tells you what speed actually reaches the TV.
2
Wire it in if at all possible
An Ethernet cable from the router to the TV removes almost every buffering problem. If running a cable is impossible, powerline adapters or a mesh node near the TV are good alternatives.
3
Clear the app cache or reinstall
On most smart TVs and streaming sticks you can clear an app's cache in the apps settings, or uninstall and reinstall it. This fixes corrupted downloads that cause stutter.
4
Update the TV and apps
Check for system updates in the TV's settings. Older TV software can struggle with newer app versions.
5
Lower the quality as a stop-gap
Setting the streaming service to "Auto" or HD rather than 4K reduces the bandwidth needed while you sort out the connection.
Platform notes
Smart TV
Built-in TV apps are often slower than a modern streaming stick. A cheap stick can breathe new life into a sluggish TV.
Console
Consoles download game updates in the background while in rest mode, which can steal bandwidth from the TV in the next room.
Stop it happening again
Use Ethernet for TVs and consoles wherever possible.
Keep the router in the open and not behind the TV.
Schedule big downloads for overnight.
When to get professional help
If buffering happens at the same time every evening across every service, even on a wired connection, ask your internet provider about congestion in your area.
This is general troubleshooting information for home users. Menus and settings differ between
device models and software versions. Back up important data before making changes, and contact
the manufacturer or an authorised repair provider for hardware faults or anything under
warranty.
