Speaker ignoring you, or answering "something went wrong"? Get it listening and back online.
Quick fixโฑ 10โ20 minAlexaGoogle HomeHomePod
Smart speakers depend completely on a working internet connection โ they send what you say to the cloud to be understood. When one stops responding or says it is having trouble, the cause is usually its Wi-Fi connection, a muted microphone, or a glitch that a restart clears.
The light ring or status light is your best diagnostic tool. Most speakers use specific colours for "no Wi-Fi", "microphone off", and "setup mode", and the manufacturer's app explains what each one means.
Try these first โ 30 seconds each
[ ]Check the microphone is not muted โ usually a red light or a physical switch on the speaker.
[ ]Make sure you are using the right wake word and speaking from within a few metres.
[ ]Check your home internet is working on another device.

1
Restart the speaker
Unplug the power cable, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. Wait a full minute for it to reconnect before testing.
2
Check its Wi-Fi status in the app
Open the Alexa, Google Home, or Apple Home app and look at the device. If it shows as offline, it may have lost the Wi-Fi password โ for example, after you changed your router or its password. Use the app's option to change the device's Wi-Fi network.
3
Improve its connection
Speakers far from the router, or behind a TV or metal shelving, can drop off Wi-Fi. Move it somewhere more open or closer to the router, or add a mesh point nearby.
4
Check voice and account settings
In the app, confirm the speaker is linked to the right account and the correct home. If the speaker responds but does not recognise you, retrain voice recognition (Voice ID in Alexa, Voice Match in Google Home).
5
Update the firmware
Speakers usually update themselves overnight when idle. If an update is waiting, leave the speaker plugged in and connected. HomePod updates can be triggered from the Home app โ Home Settings โ Software Update.
6
Factory reset as a last resort
Each speaker has its own reset method, usually holding a button or a button combination for 15โ25 seconds. Search the manufacturer's help site for your exact model, then set it up again in the app.
Platform notes
Alexa
An orange light usually means the speaker is in setup mode or trying to connect; red means the microphone is off.
Google Home
Google Nest speakers need the Google Home app on a phone on the same Wi-Fi network for setup and Wi-Fi changes.
Stop it happening again
When changing routers, keep the same network name and password to avoid reconfiguring every device.
Place speakers away from noisy appliances and in open spots.
Keep the companion app updated.
When to get professional help
If the speaker will not power on, will not enter setup mode after a factory reset, or has no status light at all, contact the manufacturer โ it may be a hardware fault covered by warranty.
This is general troubleshooting information for home users. Menus and settings differ between
device models and software versions. Back up important data before making changes, and contact
the manufacturer or an authorised repair provider for hardware faults or anything under
warranty.
