The average phone gets replaced every two to three years, but the hardware inside is often capable of lasting much longer. What usually drives people to upgrade is a tired battery, full storage, or a sense that everything is slower — all of which can be addressed for a fraction of the price of a new phone.

Here is how to get the most out of the phone you already own.

Look after the battery

Lithium-ion batteries wear out faster when they are hot, when they sit at 100% for long periods, and when they are regularly run to empty. Turn on your phone's optimised or adaptive charging, avoid gaming while fast-charging, and keep it out of hot cars.

When capacity drops below about 80%, a battery replacement from the manufacturer or an authorised shop typically costs a small fraction of a new phone and makes it feel new again.

Keep storage breathing room

Phones slow down noticeably when storage is nearly full because the system has less room for temporary files. Aim to keep at least 10–15% free. Offload old photos to the cloud, clear chat app media, and delete apps you have not opened in months.

Install updates — especially security ones

Updates can feel like a nuisance, but they fix security holes that are actively exploited. Check how long your model will receive updates; many manufacturers now promise five to seven years. Once security updates end, it is worth planning a replacement for a phone you use for banking.

Protect it physically

A cheap case and screen protector avoid the most common expensive repairs.

Clean the charging port gently every few months to avoid connection problems

Reset if it is still sluggish

If an older phone is still slow after cleaning up, a full backup followed by a factory reset and restore can clear years of accumulated clutter. Make absolutely sure the backup has completed — and that you know your account passwords — before you erase anything.
